Frage Expeditionmobile aus Mercedes GW

hello,
i hope it is OK to write in english, mein deutch is ganz schlecht.......

I am looking at converting an Mercedes Geländewagen to an expediton camper.This summer we went to Iceland, and went aroun tjhere for 2 whole weeks. But -i was then convinced that TENTS not are the best way, since weather can be rathter harsh....

Therefore we now are discussing about making our own small expedition camper. Car cannot be to be big,and we need to have room for 4 persons, two adults and my sons, 6 and 3 years old.
We have an base vehicle on hand, looking like this:




I was thinking about something like the camper made by Expediton-campers.

But, this is an very expensive solution, so i belive it will only be realized in my dreams.

Then i discoveret the EXKab , looking very interesting. Expecially since it is so light,and the fact that it can be delivered as a " leekabine ".

But - i assume it will be possible to build something like this by myself, using same condstruction method. Friend of mine,t hat is an industrial designer and develeoper, suggested to use noe frame, and make all parts with " ecken " making construction light and strong. Same procedure is used in cabins for offshore cranes.

So -looking forward to geting input, hints and tricks. Also want to apologize for using english language, but my german is really bad...

We have both, a Mercedes G and an Exkab. The cabin is really light and clever made. To built it by yourself is possible, but whether it is really cheaper?
You should discuss your wishes with Mr. Christian Loh, owner of Exkab. He is really nice and gives a lot of advices.

Yes, the Exkab is a very interesting concept
I got som ideas and pictures from Mr. Loh, but the pictures did not show to much of the joining methods etc. Also I have problems finding measurement tables for the cabins, and neither internal layout plans.
Does that maybe indicate that every cabin is “ made to order “ ?
I would also like to have the whole cabin roof to lift, and not only the rear part. Maybe that can be done as an option ?

Nevertheless – Exkab is the best and most inexpensive suggestion I have so far.

Hello GD300,

as you can find on the Exkab homepage, there are two versions: the Exkab 1 and the Exkab 2. For your G the Version 2 should fit. But Loh also creates custom made versions.
By the way, choose the German language site, it´s much more detailed than the English one.

Measures you will get, when you discuss with Mr. Loh. He will send a drawing via email and you can change it with Google Sketchup.

Our cabin is fixed with 4 screws in the original mounting system of our Nissan Navara.
If you want to put it on your G, you need a support frame on the chassis. It´s possible to do it by yourself, but believe me, it´s less dangerous to make mistakes if you discuss with somebody who has experience.
